So, now we are quite confident with the Golden Rules of Assertiveness - Decide how you feel and what you want
- Check out if you have the right and is it your responsibility
- Make a statement or take action (be specific)
- Repeat if necessary or deflect responses firmly if necessary but stick to the original statement
- After response - state clearly your own intended action.
Now we are clear about the rules, let's practice with the following situations
. - You are in a cafe - you have ordered a drink and a snack from the waitress. A family enter and place their order with the same waitress They are then served their order before you are. You are in a bit of a hurry as you only have limited time available before you have to catch a train.
- You are having an evening out with a group of friends and you have just ordered your Italian meal. While you are away from the table, some of your friends decide that it would be best for everyone to share a bottle of wine and have ordered two bottles of house wine and a glass for each of the group. Although you drink wine, tonight you would prefer to drink beer.
- You are travelling in a railway carriage that is full with passengers. It is a cold day and the heating is not very effective. A passenger sitting next to the window has opened it. This has caused a draught in your direction and it is becoming increasingly uncomfortable. No one else has done anything or has complained of feeling cold.
Open up a Word document and, honestly, write how you would deal with these situations. If you are not being assertive, then why not? What is stopping you? How can you change your behaviour to become assertive? |
